Drawing milestones by age, at a glance
Children's drawing develops in broadly predictable stages. Ages are approximate β every child moves at their own pace.
| Age | Stage | What you'll typically see |
|---|---|---|
| 1Β½β4 | Scribbling | Random marks, then controlled lines and loops; by about 3, circles and named scribbles. |
| 4β7 | Pre-schematic | First people ("tadpole" figures), floating objects, colours chosen for fun rather than realism. |
| 7β9 | Schematic | A ground line and sky line, repeated symbols for people and houses, "X-ray" pictures. |
| 9β12 | Dawning realism | More detail, overlapping objects, early perspective β and a more self-critical eye. |
Frequently asked questions
What can a child's drawing tell you?
Drawings show how a child's thinking, fine motor skills and imagination are developing: how they organise space, the details they notice, the stories they tell and the feelings they express. Because children's drawing follows broadly predictable stages, a drawing can tell you where your child is on that journey.

No. DrawingWise gives creative, strengths-based insights for curiosity and conversation. It is not a medical, psychological or diagnostic assessment. If you have concerns about your child's development, speak with your paediatrician or a child specialist.
